Centre for Climate Smart Agriculture
The Centre for Climate Smart Agriculture (CCSA), a multidisciplinary research centre, was established during August 2022 to address the interlinked challenges of sustainable food security, resource conservation, climate resilience, carbon footprint- including Green House Gas (GHG) emission, under the accelerating climate change scenarios using technological interventions and AI/ML-based decisions. The ultimate goal is a better food system for healthier people, planet and economy.
CCSA has international collaboration with Texas A&M University; University of Nebraska at Lincoln and University of Texas at Austin for guidance & exchange of ideas on a regular basis.
In addition to core faculty, CCSA has adjunct faculty from the Departments of Agronomy, Soil Science, Civil Engineering (Water Resources Engg & Environmental Engg). It has collaboration with the Depts. of Computer Sc. & Engg., Electrical Engg & Agril Engg from SOA and the School of Infrastructure at IIT Bhubaneswar.
Major Achievements: Recently received a BRICS sanctioned project titled “Spatio-temporal Process and Mechanism of Drought Propagation in Agricultural Regions of BRICS Countries Based on Earth Observation Sensor Web (EO4DP)” partnering with Brazil, China and South Africa.
A good number of PhD students associated with the CCSA are engaged in field, lab and modelling studies to develop climate resilient cropping systems suitable for the local agro-climatic conditions. The faculty have a good number of high impact journal publications.
CCSA is in the process of adopting a few drought-affected villages in western Odisha with tribal population, affected by the climate variability, and converting them to Climate Smart villages.
A one-day International Brain-storming Workshop titled “Drought Scenarios in Odisha: Adaptation & Mitigation Strategies” was conducted on 23rd March 2023 with the participation of a large number of domain experts. The international advisor from Texas A&M University participated physically as a key resource person. An international conference titled “Sustainable Agricultural Development with Climate Smart System (SADCSS 2024)” was organized by the CCSA during 18-20 July 2024 in a hybrid mode, participated by a large number of experts from academia, industries and research organizations worldwide. The international advisor from University of Nebraska, Lincoln was a key resource person who participated physically.
CCSA is offering at present two courses namely: “Integrated Watershed Management” and “Science of Weather, Climate and Climate Change” for PhD students from related disciplines.
An international Masters Programme on “Climate Smart Systems” is planned to be offered by the CCSA for the students from India and the neighbouring countries.
